Joe is right. Hold up on the steel wool. That changes the demensions of
the horn. Alignment is a likely suspect. However, if you are saying
slide(S), it is unlikely that all your slides would pull badly from
alignment problems. At the risk of offending you, could they be dirty?
I mean from shipping grease, playing, other players, former players, etc.
Did you buy the horn new? How clean were the slides to begin with.
And have you cleaned off the old grease with each application before
putting on the new? Grease viscosity changes just like oil.

Also, as a former dairy farmer, just know that bag balm is temperature
sensitive. The colder the stiffer. Could get real interesting if that
residue stays into cold weather.
