John,
The great thing about a Rudy 5/4 is that you can get so many different sounds with it- a truly extremely versatile tuba. What mouthpiece you need depends upon what you want to do with it. As one other BBS'er mentioned, a Helleberg-esque funnel is generally not the best route, but a bowl-shaped cup mouthpiece. For a REALLY HUGE sound, I've used a very old Josef Tilz mouthpiece that has the proper shank, a bowl shape, and is bigger than any mouthpiece made today. It also has a large, well-rounded rim. Once I got used to it, I could literally play for hours without undue fatigue. Doug Elliott took measurements of this mouthpiece in January 2000, and probably would make a copy for anyone wanting to try a really big, really comfortable (to me) mouthpiece. On the other hand, I've used a smallish mouthpiece with the proper shank, and played many brass quintet gigs on the 5/4 Rudy without being overbearing.
Best of luck,
Lee Stofer
