A number of years ago I bought an E flat (more or less) tuba which was manufactured by W Hillyard. It was imported by WW Pepper and Sons of Philadelphia, serial number 54653.

According to one book listing brass instrument manufacturers, Hillyard was in business in England in the last part of the nineteenth century and then disappeared; however, the style of the piston valves seems to indicate a date of manufacture in the 1930s.

Does anyone have any idea when this horn was made?

Thanks,

George Gray
