Gold does not corrode or tarnish, but it is softer than silver, so it wears out faster if you rub it a lot. I think it is customary to put a layer of silver under the gold plating, so when the gold goes, you still have silver. In addition to looking pretty, the gold plating tends to be smoother and slicker than silver that has been used for a while. That gives the mouthpiece a different feel, which you may or may not like.
