Chrome plating has the nasty habit of peeling off, leaving razor-sharp edges. It is also pretty slippery.
Silver wears away with no peeling. You should be able to get it replated in silver for $15 or $20. In the mean time, you might want to wash off the rim and then paint it with some clear fingernail polish. It won't last that long, but it may give your lip a chance to heal.
