I have to agree with you on some of the early Masur recordings, he definetly kept them tamed compared to Metha. The Bruckner 7, Masurs opening concert was extremely disappointed me. This is not to say that there playing was not fabulous to say the least but there was definetly room for more low brass. I will say however that he does have the strings playing very full and beautiful.
