Hi, Jay (and others).
I think the reason that B&S stopped with the PT4s is that they have been working on improvements. Word has it that the new ones are amazing. I look forward to trying them.
Back to the mouthpieces, etc. I play a modified copy of a PT50, so it has that type of blank weight. I then wanted a "normal" (lighter) weight version, so I had a copy made. I found that the copy was missing some of the overtones that the heavier one had. I found myself not using the lighter one. I agree that heavier mouthpieces have more difficulty in response, but until I get a Mpc. I like better, I'll stick with the "heavy". I like the sound, but want better response. (practice helps, too)
Meanwhile, on Mpc. fronts, The Laskey Company is working on Tuba Mpcs. (Scott Laskey was the Mpc. "wizard" at Schilke for many years.) These Mpcs. should be great. (I'm waiting, Scott! hint, hint!!!!)
Too much rambling, Bye for now, CJH
