I firmly believe that range is totally a player issue. If you get a chance find a copy of Steve Seward's CD entitled 'Kansas City Dances'. On the CD there is a recording of him performing the 3rd movement of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto on a 5/4 Rudy CC. Steve jumps into the extreme upper register very readily. If hearing this doesn't convince you that range and accuracy in the high range is determined by the player rather than the equipment I can't imagine what would. Now, having said that, assuming I had the technical skills to play the Mendelssohn I would never choose to do it on such a big horn. For solo work I'm much much much more preferential to the sound of my F. This is just my humble opinion but I wouldn't worry so much about the finger pattern of one horn over another or which one was bigger; my primary concern is the sound that i create.
Just my two cents.. I hope i didn't go off on too much of a tangent,
joseph
