Thanks for all the advice, which I'll attempt as soon as it's late enough to practice (8:30 AM on a Sunday morning won't go down too well with the neighbours!)

The explanation that adding tubing and slurring up at the same time is crossing into a different harmonic series makes sense (I'm more conscious of it when I play trombone, where it doesn't seem to cause any problem in the attack, I wonder why).

I have been working on concentrating on the airflow, keeping it steady...more successful with some notes than others, but I'll keep practicing. I'll give the alternate fingering a go in the short term.
