Brass is composed mostly of copper and zinc. An instrument that is not cleaned very often
accumulates acidic residues which reacts with (dissolves) the zinc leaving behind only the
copper full now of tiny pores or holes where the zinc was. The copper which is red is of
a sponge-like quality and really can't be repair very readily.
