Annealing will destroy any finish that exists on the brass. Do not try it if you do not understand what it is you are attempting.
When doing typical dent removal, annealing is not often performed unless the brass is seriously work hardened by previous excessive dent work. Take a look at the process of rebuilding a tuba at www.oberloh.com and you will see that there is no emphasis on annealing prior to dent work because it is not typically required. Check it out.
