That is, of course, the crux of the issue. Some might hold that "no vibration is by and large the best vibration" for the body/bell of a horn maintaining that the interioir shape/size of the tubing that make up the instrument is the key. Others agonize over the type of metal, the type of lacquer, the size of the font used in bell engraving..... (trying for three "types"...)
For sure "it's different". Is it worse? Or is it just "outmoded" to look like you're emulating an old Conn honker here in the 21st century? If you want controversy bring the subject up to the French horn section- some professional players with detachable bell horns and others who wouldn't deign to plant flowers in 'em.
I'd figure there are clearly GREAT tuba's out there with and without detachable bells and so it's an open issue for any given horn (and for the part attached to the mouthpiece opposite the leadpide end).
