I'd go for it. Any harm to your musical development would be temporary at the worst. They teach you how to march without killing your chops. The memories and experiences you'd have would far outweigh any negatives. Try it for one year... how much could that hurt?
I never joined a corps because in Seattle, it just wasn't the thing. If I had the chance to do it over again, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
