In marching band judging, the primary judging slant is toward perfectablity and difficulty. Entertainment value fits under one category called General Effect, but top scores go to bands that are the cleanest players and marchers whether they're crowd-pleasers or not. There has been a conflict between "crowd" shows and "judge-oriented" shows for decades; this is nothing new. If you're going to contests, you have to please the judges or you get killed.
