I make it a point to tell all my students that there are days when you pick up the horn and your face feels like it belongs to a plumber from Cleveland (not that there is anything bad about being a plumber from Cleveland) and has never seen a tuba before. This is your brain telling you that it is not ready to do this at this time and you should put the horn down and walk away from it. Your brain is working on something else and does not have enough resources to give the focus necessary to play the horn at that time. Come back to it later.

Practicing should always be fun. If you force yourself through a practice session when your mind is not ready to do it, it becomes more like work and stops being fun. This makes it harder to pick up the horn again later so give the brain the space that it needs - it will all work out in the end.

Just my observations after 35 years.

Roger
