I totally agree. If the "base band" Army, Navy and Marine standards are the same as they were a few years ago you need to know all major (and preferably also natural, harmonic, and melodic minor scales) with arpeggios (eighth follwed by sixteenths each octave) as fast and cleanly as possible 2-3 octaves. Then they have you sight-read to failure.

Here's some unsolicitated advice: if you're strongly considering a non-military career in music then go to a great music school first (college/conservatory). I enlisted after four years of college (and don't regret it) and observed a number of disillusioned and bitter folks who went in right out of high school and totally burned out. The demands of the job/lifestyle make making large amounts of technical progress very difficult for most people. The job is not as much fun as many people seem to think it will be. . .
