For empirical proof: remember when you got a ring stuck on your finger, or a jar lid was too tight? What did Mom tell you to do? PUT IT UNDER HOT WATER TO LOOSEN IT

Just to be difficult, I have to ask. What if you put your finger under the hot water not to make the ring larger, but the finger smaller?

Physics in the real world is so much more complicated than the simple formulas, etc. taught in undergraduate courses. Some one (I'm pretty sure not Newton) once said: "Physicists deal with the theoretical, engineers deal with the real world".
