I play a long-scale bass guitar and used to use strings that had very high tension. In rooms with wide-ranging heating/air systems, the temperature can commonly cycle up/down 5-10 degrees. This can cause my bass to go up and down almost a quarter-tone. Changing recently to a more flexible, lower-tension string set has helped. Even so, some nights the pitch shifts can drive you crazy.
