Big ultrasound vats/machines/whatever are starting to show up for cleaning French horns. No chemicals...and apparently they come back clean as a whistle. At the IHS this year you could get your horn ultra-sounded for $125. Same as they clean metal jewelry with. I expect eventually there will be a big enough ultrasound whatever for tubas. I don't think you even have to take them apart, just flush the grunk out afterwards.

As for the goo from the vegetable oil...what is that stuff they clean engines with? "Gunk?" And then there is Goo-Gone, but I think that is if you put duct tape on your valves, which would lower you from moron to idiot.

Not entirely faultless myself, when I had my first borrowed French horn, I used vaseline on the slides because I didn't know any better. My teacher first fainted and then suggested I remove it and use slide grease.
