I'm trialing a Fafner from Baltimore Brass right now. I played it today with a brass band - the other tuba players turned dark green with jealousy. They all tried it and like the way it plays and the sound it produces. I've also tried it as the bottom voice in a tuba quartet, where it works well. It's a very versatile horn with a great sound. The dynamic range is as impressive as the sound.

As for not playing big horns in small groups I say hogwash. I've seen Chris Olka play a 6/4 Nirschl in a quintet. I often play a Willson 3050 CC in quintet and tuba quartet. If you can make music with a horn and balance the rest of the ensemble then go for it.
