I went to a tiny high school that had a 20 piece orchestra but no bass, so the director had me play my Eb helicon in her orch. When time for county-wide orchestra came along, it developed that I was the only tubist (heliconist?) in Cuyahoga county. During rehearsal of the county group, the director wanted some bass notes my 3-valver couldn't reach in the Russian Sailor's dance, so he asked the tuba player from the Cleveland orchestra to come in and help out (and he played second chair!). I was so naive at the time, I didn't even get his name. That must have been one of the queerest tuba sections ever in an orchestra
(bar Hoffnung).
