I have an old Czech-made 3-V mellophone (NOT F/Eb) that is built in (8 foot) C with crooks for Bb and A.

It plays best in C. I use a teeny-tiny old Bach trombone mouthpiece (barely fits in the receiver) made in the Bronx...I can't remember exactly, something like 24_ _ _ (letters that imply a wide cushion rim, etc.)

The intonation of the old mellophone isn't far off at all (mildly flat 5th partial), and the pistons are quite tight. I have fun playing horn repertoire on the instrument. With the Bach "negotiable" mouthpiece and instrument pitched in C, I can do a transposition trick and read the French horn music with no trouble.
