Rick, what Gus said. You need to learn to think like a string player....the note is where you put it. But Tbone has an advantage that the open tones can be fixed too, because you don't want to ram your teeth going into zero position anyway. On stringed instruments, if your open strings are out of tune and you can't stop to fix them (or if one BREAKS!!) ... you find yourself doing logarithmic computations on the fly to fit those notes into higher positions on lower strings. Now, most string players don't realize the math behind the fact that the notes get closer together as you go up the string...but Rick the Engineer should be able to wax poetic on slide positions, huh? Just figure out what tube length you need for which harmonic of what fundamental you want to play the pitch on....and away you go.
