If you want foundation for a band, I would suggest that a big American style tuba is what you are looking for. Probably the most big sound for the buck would be a rebuilt Conn 2xJ with short action valves (much easier than most piston valves). Or (if you can find one) a big Holton like Rick Denney has, but no short action valves there. The Conn's can be had, redone, with cases from a number of folks who rebuild. Barodi, Badger, Taylor, etc.

If you really want rotary valves, the big Cerveny 601 will probably supply as much foundation as any German style horn.

Or, if you are REALLY flush I suppose a Hisbrunner would work.

Just some thoughts, for what they are worth.
