Upgrading a mouthpiece is like buying shoes--kids outgrow them. I like starting younger students on a Conn Helleberg 7B, then sometime in 8th grade, or by the 9th grade, moving to the standard Conn Helleberg. Flat rim is generally no problem unless they use mouthpiece pressure.
