Upgrading a mouthpiece is like buying shoes--kids outgrow them. Would those parents keep their 8th grader in the same size shoe they wore in 6th grade? Probably not. Too, since the student does not have to purchase an instrument, then it is appropriate that they buy a mouthpiece. Compare clarinet mouthpiece prices!

I like starting younger students on a Conn Helleberg 7B, then sometime in 8th grade, or by the 9th grade, moving to the standard Conn Helleberg. Flat rim is generally no problem unless they use mouthpiece pressure.
