As far as equipment goes, I would say the most popular horn among serious amateurs seems to be the Holton Farkas horns, especially the H179 (I've owned one for almost 20 years). H379 is also widely used, and less expensive. Professionals seem to prefer vintage Conn 8Ds. I understand that Yamaha makes some very good double horns as well.

I don't really know much about various mouthpieces. I am comfortable with the one that came with the horn; it's a Farkas MDC (medium deep cup).
