Legend Brass's euphoniumist, Jeff Cottrell of Brian Bowmans's UNT studio, was first chair Texas All-State a few years back (1980), so I am sure this recording sets a pretty high standard. In fact, I believe that this year's euphonium selections are the same as they were in 1979-1980 (I think it's a 3-year rotation). So, he's probably pretty familiar with this year's etudes.

Here are some more tips:
Don't just practice by yourself. Make sure you play these several times for your director and section leader.

If YOU are the section leader and if there is someone else in your section that has close to the same level of proficiency as you do, make it a competition! I knew I had to beat my second chair at all-region to keep my first chair, and I am convinced that this is what made the difference for me when I made all-state. The following year, my "competition" moved to another city, and I failed to qualify.
