So basically the BD's mistake was not realizing the now all too true maxim:
"If you want to keep your job, don't do anything that will offend anybody. Sure, you won't always be able to get creative, but no one will be upset and we can all live happy lives."
The whole thing is just a big mess. The BD should have realized the implications of his actions (justified or not), but the crowd could have been a little more civilized in their response.
