I'm with Rick on this one.
At 6 feet and 240 lbs, I am not small either. If there is any chance, I will use my tuba stand with me when I play. If you can eliminate balance and weight problems, you can concentrate on breathing and technicality.
Congratulations on not only using the stand, but trying something that didn't look good, but did work well.
