I'll go a bit further and say that a new player, whether he's on CC, BBb, or Eb or F, should try to work with fitting into the ensemble.

Intonation improvements will come along eventually through further education of nearby section members, too. It's amazing how receptive the more veteran players are to someone who's asking, "How do I sound? Am I fitting in okay?" while, in fact, those questions are also nudging a player with less of an ear to listen more closely to what's going on around him.

It's an honest thing to ask, but it's got the side effect of getting others to listen more intently. A good player with good people skills can get a section to improve quite a bit without ever having to tell others how they should play.

(sorry about using the phrase "people skills"... makes me think of Office Space... ;-) )
