My Meinl-Weston 2145 had the same problem. I tried a few things and they didn't fix the problem permanently. I finally just removed the rod assembly. It will unscrew completely from the top fitting, just remove the nuts first and don't be afraid to turn the rod hard to get it loosened. I never really needed it and don't miss it a bit. The "holders" for it are still soldered to the fifth valve slide, so I or a future owner can screw it back in if I ever so desire.
