First, they have the same bell. The LZ has the larger body of the 45S-LP. It's a little wider in the bottom bow and branches. The 45S has a tapered bore of .728 through .846" bore and the valve section sits lower. The 45S-LZ starts at .768" bore and enters the 4th valve at .807" bore where it expands to .846" bore in the 4th valve's tuning slide where it enters the 4th rotor and leaves for the main tuning slide at .846" bore. The 45S doesn't sound as big as the 45S-LZ, but I find the intonation to be better. The 45S-LZ looses some intonation points, but is easier to play in the lower register. Though bigger F tubas, they both have that characteristic "rotor F tuba sound" that is why most people go looking for a F tuba.
Meinl Weston charges more for the 45S-LZ, hence the higher price. Both are in stock. You should come try them for yourself. Matt
