We indeed are all built differently. The reasons for not puffing the cheeks is to keep the corners of the embouchure firm and in place, but some cheek puffing may occur, especially in the lower register. The rule of thumb is that if it works and works well, and doesn't inhibit your musicianship, then it is probably OK!
BTW....Dizzy's set up was very different from most of us, but he certainly sounded fine!
