I agree with Lew that it's usually best to play ophicleide parts on tubas these days. It isn't that the ophicleide sound wasn't the what the composer had in mind when scoring. It is that all other instruments have changed (although not in name), and the sound of a historic instrument rarely goes well with modern instruments. All of the instruments -- woodwind, brass, stringed -- commonly in use in 19th century orchestras have changed their sound considerably.

It is indeed enlightening and enjoyable to hear re-creations of earlier orchestral works by skilled musicians using historical instruments or replicas. But, using one historical instruemt along with modern instruments is something neither enlightening nor musically balanced.
