I have had my Neptune for about 5 years and I love it. Before purchasing one though, I too suggest you play a few of them. Also, try a variety of mouthpieces. I have changed mouthpieces about 4 times. The Jim Self model Yamaha works well, as do the Marcinkiewick (I hope I spelled that right), N4 and N2. The pitch is about the same as other B&S/VMI tubas. When and if you get one, just spend some time with a tuner and figure out the tendencies. About clarity, the horn speaks very well, and I have always been pleased when I hear how it sounds out front. If you are looking for a big horn, that plays great, and is very affordable, the Neptune is it. If I can help in any other way, e-mail me personally. Good luck.
