Hmmm.... My thought is that the Pentagon does not actually have a "shortage" of military musicians in the way they suggest. My guess is they would rather not have to employ Military musicians at all. All the DC Bandsmen start at a higher rank than your typical honor guard type and so make more money. Shortage? How long do you suppose the Pentagon has been working on the fake bugler and at what estimated cost? I would suggest that if the Pentagon had a real "chronic" shortage of military musicians, they could just ... um ... HIRE MORE. Instead they spent time and money on this digital bugle? In my opinion any use of fake buglers is because of cost and consistency (need I rehash the JFK funeral?)

Chronic shortage. Blech! When did anyone last hear of a lack of trumpet players at military auditions.
