I used to play the ophicleide with the Pittsburgh Symphony in the 1950's and 60's when the Mendelsohn Choir did Elijah. I borrowed the ophicleide from the Grand Army of the Republic Band in Pittsburgh's north side. The had 6 of them ranging from BBb contrabass to F bass. They all were in good condition and in tune. I wish I had not returned them to the band room because the Masonic Temple kicked the GAR band out and all the instruments were thrown away! That included about 75 Civil War brass instruments as well as reeds.
