I have always felt that when something as large as a tuba spends so much time in your lap and on your mouth that you should "genderize" it in whatever direction you swing. My Alexander is named "Lucielle" (though she rarely sounds much like her namesake owned by B.B. King). My YFB 621 is named "Sabine" after the evil M'lady DeWinter in "The Three Musketeers" (named following a performance we did - right after I bought her - of Fantastique).

Not everyone follows this practice: Ed Surface of the San Angelo Symphony and Angelo State University (in Texas) calls his baby "Brutus the String Killer". I believe he means it, too...
