I fully believe F's on a BBb Holton can be measured at 40 cents flat, I've seen several Holtons close to that. Still, they have some other marvelous traits.
I agree with Joe, the inconsistancy of handmade tubas contributed to the problem. AJ told me that these tubas were made so rarely that the people who made one had often been moved to another position (or had retired) by the time another was made.
