Colleges and universities serve several functions, and only a couple are noted here:

- to acquire "official certification" for some gubmunt-regulated job
- to acquire knowledge and skills in a supervised and supportive atmosphere
- to exist as a place to store 18-to-25-year-olds who are not yet grown-ups

Each to his needs - as most of the professors who fill the offices of these institutions believe (in a twisted paraphrase).

Joe "who can think of many folks who have acquired the skills and knowledge that one can acquire at a school, but who did it completely independent of an institution...and many others who could never acquire a given set of skills and knowledge under any situation or under any circumstances" S.
