I have a question about a muted section in Ein Heldenleben. There are two sections marked mit Dampfer - three meas. before 66 and two measures before 71. A few years ago I seem to remember a prominent orchestral tubist (name not important) say that he played the second muted section open (if I remember correctly). I have played it both ways (muted and open) in various rehearsals this week. The first one really makes sense, but in the section before 71 no one else in the brass is muted, I believe. Therefore, it is really hard to make the passage at 74 cut through the texture. Any comments and help is greatly appreciated.
