I recall that my high school had some big Conn sousaphones (that probably dated from the nineteen-thirties) that had a frosted silver-plated finish with gold-plated bells. I don't remember the model number, but they certainly weighed around 45 pounds. They had a great sound and were very controllable -- from floor-shaking loud to barely audible. For years after I quit playing those monsters, my left shoulder would ache from time to time. Putting weight on the shoulder relieved the pain. Now that I have become un-used to the weight, I don't think I'll get used to it again!
