My flautist wife tells me that I'm mistaken--Robert Dick plays a stainless contrabass flute--a one-of-a-kind model with a peculiar headjoint that allows for wah-wah type effects. Okay, that's ONE flute.
I seem to remember that Ren Schilke experimented with various types of materials for trumpet bells and that steel was found to have a very dull "dead" sound. What this means for tuba is uncertain. Still, it'd be fun to find a bell-shaped hunk of stainless--maybe from some futuristic industrial lighting fixture or a surplus aircraft part--and try it out as a real bell.
