I've got the Yamaha 3/4 for my beginner, and a couple of Conn 5j's that I just picked up for once they get a clue. I really like these 5j's, they play well, aren't huge and have, gasp, 4 valves!! I've never liked the older kids playing the 3/4, they overplay them and they don't have the presence in the band like a slightly bigger horn does. If I could only buy one, I'd wait a semester or so to start tubas and get something like the 5J.
That's my thoughts.
