I happened to be working on two York (4/4) bottom bows and put them both back together at the same time. One set (cap and bow) I tinned, the other I merely fluxed. All surfaces were thoroghly cleaned (I use 200 grit emery cloth where bare brass is to be attached to bare brass; buffing is saved for later). I didn't intentionally try to stuff the voids full of solder, but I used enough to make a good solid joint with no gaps visible between the bow and the cap.

The curious thing was that the tinned bow had a disctincly more "solid" sound when I tapped it with my fingernail. This probably won't make a discernable difference in the sound, but I found it interesting nonetheless.
