I play a Bach 50B3 with the large bell and open wraps. The bass 'bone of today is really more than a large tenor. The taper of the bell bore is more conical than the tenor instrument. The sound is quite different, much more mellow. Partly because of the larger bore, but also because of the shape, it is fairly hard to push the horn to the edge where is has the hard brassy sound. I play mostly concert band music, and where the part is written for the bass 'bone it is quite often a counter melody part. Where the first and second 'bones play harmony in lock step with each other, the bass bone part can be quite different. Unfortunately, where the third trombone part exists, it is usually dumped on the bass 'bone and it not as much fun. My two cents! Jim Tyler
