One list member recently bought a 10 year old 982 Eb for under $1000, and the tuba was in decent condition -- as advertised. An AMAZING find, IMO.
I just recently sold a 4 year old 983 Eb for around $3500, as another reference point.
I think the new, wholesale price for these horns is around $5K (check wwandbw.com). I wouldn't think you'd be likely to get it for under $2500, and I wouldn't agree to pay more than $4K, and this would be 80% of the new price, which is too high, IMO.
