From a review by by David Ll. Jones

EMI’s double-CD set of Barbirolli’s 1950’s recordings of Vaughan Williams and Elgar for HMV, advertised previously in the Journal (CMS 566543-2) is selling very well indeed and has already had to be re-pressed by EMI because of the high demand. Here is what Hedley Berry had to say about this set in MDC’s Classic Express for September 1998:

.... Barbirolli recorded it [VW symphony no. 7] having given the premiere a few months before, and it is a surging powerhouse of a performance in which the orchestra excels. It all makes wonderful sense in Sir John’s hands (no wonder the 8th was dedicated to ‘Glorious John’). On the 2-CD set we are also given Dives & Lazarus, the Wasps Overture and ‘Greensleeves’. The Tuba Concerto, a jolly little piece, is played by Catalinet who gave the first performance shortly before and the lovely Oboe Concerto has never sounded better than when played by Evelyn Rothwell — Lady Barbirolli. Elgar is represented by previously unreleased recordings of the Introduction & Allegro and the Serenade for Strings and last but not least the Londoner Barbirolli conducts that noble tribute to London town: The Cockaigne overture. What a set! This is not to be missed!
