As far as mouthpieces go, I use a Conn Helleberg on my MC VMI. I find that (and this may be particular to me) any larger mouthpiece is too woofy on such a large instrument. I'm used to playing the canadian brass Arnold Jacobs helleberg, so there's not that much difference, just a smaller backbore on the conn.
I haven't noticed any really horrible pitches on the horn, though I've only had it a couple of weeks. The instrument's response is very even in all registers, but if I try to muscle something, it just won't respond the right way and that messes with the intonation, too.
